“I didn’t have perfect grades. I wasn’t from a top college.
I didn’t even know where to start.
But I had one thing: Time. And I used it well.”
If you’re a student dreaming of studying abroad but feel overwhelmed, under prepared, or unsure
I want to share something important…..Planning early changed my entire life.
How It All Started
I still remember the night I googled “How to apply for a Master’s abroad.”I was sitting on my hostel bed, confused, scared, and overwhelmed by 100 tabs.
DAAD… Erasmus… SOP… IELTS… I didn’t even know what half of those meant.
But I knew one thing:I didn’t want to rush. I didn’t want regrets. So I promised myself — “I’ll give myself a full year. No shortcuts.”
Month 1: I Stopped Guessing and Started Researching
Instead of asking random friends, I took a notebook and listed:
Fields I truly enjoy: Biotech, Neuroscience, Public Health
Countries I could afford: Germany, Sweden, Netherlands
Programs in English, high-quality research
That first month, I didn’t apply to anything. I just learned. And it made all the difference.
Month 2–3: I Faced My Fear - IELTS
English wasn’t the problem. I’d never taken a test like IELTS. I didn’t know the format. But I gave myself time.
I practiced speaking with friends
I watched IELTS Liz on YouTube
I took mock tests every Sunday
By the time I booked the test, I wasn’t scared anymore, I was ready. Final Score: 7.5 and no coaching. Just consistency.
Month 4: I Wrote My First SOP Draft (And It Was Terrible)
Yes it was bad. Full of cliches, awkward sentences, and no real story. But it was a start. And from there, I rewrote it again and again until it became a story I was proud of.
Real tip: Don’t wait for the “perfect SOP.” Start ugly. Edit often.
Month 5: I Messaged Strangers on LinkedIn and Got Gold
This part changed everything.
I searched:
“MSc Biotechnology Lund University”“Public Health Sweden alum”
And I sent them a simple message:
“Hi! I’m a final-year student from India hoping to apply for the same program. Could I ask you a few questions?”
To my surprise, they replied. They shared honest insights:
What the professors are like
Whether the coursework is practical
What job opportunities are realistic
No blog could give me what those 10-minute chats gave me.
Month 6–8: I Built a Strong, Clean Application
Polished my SOP with feedback from 2 mentors.
Got 2 LORs from professors (after sending them my resume and goals).
Created an academic-style CV with Canva.
Took help from Grammarly for final edits.
Month 9–10: I Submitted My Applications (Without Panic)
No last-minute pressure. No technical issues. No sleepless nights before deadlines.
I submitted every application at least 10 days early. And it felt amazing.
The Results
I got 3 admits including my dream program in Sweden.
I received a partial scholarship.
I felt confident in every interview.
I became someone who helps others apply now.
What I Want You to Know
You don’t need a 9.5 CGPA. You don’t need to be from IIT or have foreign internships. You just need one thing: a head start.
If you start early, you give yourself time to:
Research properly.
Write, edit, rewrite.
Ask alumni.
Apply to scholarships.
Practice IELTS.
